Variety Selection - White Mold Management Practices

Planting less susceptible varieties is the most effective management practice available for limiting yield losses to white mold. Although "resistant" varieties are unavailable, less susceptible varieties can be found in all maturity groups. The effect of these varieties can be substantial.

In Wisconsin's three-year on-farm study, white mold incidence in the less susceptible S19-90 variety was at least 30 percent less than white mold incidence in the two more susceptible varieties, BSR101 and Sturdy.

Since this study was completed, additional varieties that are less susceptible to white mold have been developed and are being released by both public and private breeders. Because the perofrmance of a variety is strongly influenced by environmental conditions, variety evaluations are planted at several locations in all states in the north central region of Minnesota.

Information about avariety performance is available from variety evaluations performed at locations where white mold has been a problem or in nurseries where inoculation and misting or irrigation provide conditions favorable for white mold development. In Minnesota varieties are evaluated in the southern, central, and northern regions.
